A trip to Hamilton Island isn't complete without taking a cruise out to the Great Barrier Reef. So we checked the kids into kids' camp for the day and off we went. It was a cloudy and rainy day so the cruise out we didn't really get to see much but once we were out there the rain didn't matter because we were in the water anyway.
I was determined that I was going to attempt the scuba dive. I mean how many people can say they've dived the Great Barrier Reef. But I've never done it before and was really nervous how my ears would react to the pressure. I sucked it up and went anyway. We did a few practice "dives" sitting under the water to get used to breathing through the mouth piece and I wasn't so sure about it! In my head I was talking myself down from quitting and going to find Mary and just snorkel. But I wasn't going to look like a chicken. So off we went under water. At first I was pretty impressed with myself and how it wasn't so bad and all of a sudden a few minutes into going down I started to panic. I just wanted to go back up and take a deep breath!! Our guide kept giving me the "ok" sign checking if we were ok and I gave him back an "I'm not so sure, I'm kind of freaking out sign". He squeezed my hand, pointed to his eyes and then pointed around us reminding me off what all we were about to see. I tried to stay calm and take a few deeper breaths and was able to calm myself back down and enjoy the rest of the dive. We didn't go down very far but for me it was the perfect place for my first dive!! If it wasn't the reef I may have let myself chicken out. But I didn't want to miss anything!!! It was a pretty awesome experience!
The rain went away and we finally had some nicer weather for the last little bit of our time at the reef!! The views and snorkeling were just indescribable.
We even spotted a sea turtle!!!
